You've missed my point there. I don't care about the Torrent, Direct, MiRC or whatever DL process there is. The thing that hurt my feelings was why I'm being called 'Lazy' (in a sense, that I do not do the hard works to get anime). For these 4 years you weren't lazy at all and similarly for 10 years neither was I.


A question: Lets say that you've got a 3MBps line. Even then why would you share when it's still costing you as it is now with Bangladeshi net?

There's a certain truth to it: "anime isn't necessarily free". But doing piecemeal calculations to factor in connection fees, electricity bills and other irrelevant costs is a pretty arrogant, immature endeavour.

Dattebayo are one of the fastest fansubbers I've seen around and they've got a strong enough following that they can charge for their anime but they don't.

Why?

Well one of the reasons is because they respect those who own the copyrights and while they're spreading this anime for free, cutting into profit margins directly is a pretty cowardly thing to do. Similarly, if they started charging for it, that goes against the whole mantra of spreading anime awareness. Given that they're running a very rapid operation, I'm sure their costs are nothing to be scoffed at but do they complain? No. Yeah, you can donate if you want to but it's voluntary to the point that a formal donation structure is non-existent.

shinobi21 mentioned that people abroad share like crazy. I'll give him a strongly affirmative "Hell yeah!". And here's the scoop: everyone I know pays for their own Internet bills and electricity bills, but no-one thinks twice about sharing. I've got a 2Mbps connection and my friend has a 24Mbps connection. From RMVB to 1080p... it doesn't matter. If I've got it, I can share it—and it's the same for pretty much all the people I know. That hasn't stopped me from giving him my anime and vice-versa. In Bangladesh, I had broadband while my friends had dialup. I recall that they still gave me a bunch of AMVs and high-res wallpapers and what-not. I don't think I recall a single instance where they counted their minutes spent downloading.

Over here, we have an Anime Society which shows two-hours a day of anime, three days a week. They need to rent out a lecture theatre with HD projectors. Of course there's a membership fee but here's the thing: I've never heard them bug people to pay up. They'll give a polite reminder once in a while but they expect that the people who are going to stick with the Society will undoubtedly pay their dues (they get special benefits like reduced ticket prices to the anime expos in March and October, etc), whereas casual viewers will come and go. This way, they manage to keep up financially, *more* people get to enjoy anime in general and best of all, everyone gets the same content. Member benefits don't relate directly to the anime itself. This is a very important and very mature step taken by the Society.

Sharing works and I've not ever encountered an instance, bar going to a shop, where I actually had pay for my anime or pay more than what I do on a regular basis (i.e., Yes, I pay my Internet bills but I'd have to pay them regardless of whether I download anime or not. And of course, when I keep my PC off, I still have to pay the bills. It's just how things work.)

The idea here is not to belittle anyone but show that sharing works, and bringing up issues of money in a situation and place where the majority of people share out of goodwill/exchanges/friendship/etc is usually pretty insulting. Think about it.

Nah, I agree that it's an opinion-based thing. But you're the first person I've met that's felt this way. And I meet a lot of people involved with anime in general, work or otherwise.

i guess we should quit from this debate.. this seems to be pointless to me.. if we debate on this topic, this will go on forever.. so better if we both quit.. i have some points behind my opinions and you also have some good points behind you opinion.. everyone is right from their point of view.. but there will always be someone who will either disagree with me or disagree with you..

I don't think it was really a debate to be honest. This sort of discussion has been done long and hard ages ago all over the world. As you can see with my examples, there's no room for debating. Everyone just goes with the flow.
